Solutions for Transepidermal Water loss

Have You Ever Experienced Pronounced Fine Lines and Wrinkles, Overly Dry, Crepey or Dull Skin?

These are all a result of Transepidermal Water Loss or TEWL

What is TEWL?
Water that passively evaporates through the skin to the external environment due to water vapor pressure on both sides of the skin barrier. Basically, TEWL refers to the water your skin loses through its surface. The skin is comprised of three primary layers: the outermost layer; the dermis or middle layer; and the hypodermis, the undermost layer. When water passes from the dermis through the epidermis and evaporates from the skin’s surface you have TEWL. A variety of factors can impact the skin and damage the skin’s barrier, which will then affect TEWL level; such factors include diet, skincare products that can cause dryness and irritation, as well as low humidity.

Staying well hydrated and keeping skin protected and moisturized are key in maintaining desirable levels of TEWL, therefore minimizing the accelerated aging of skin, and maintaining optimum skin health. Focus on choosing moisturizers and serums that combine humectant and occlusive ingredients such as Hyaluronic Acid and ceramides. Humectants help to draw moisture from the air to the epidermis. The occlusives keep pollutants, toxins and harmful bacteria out. Together they work to protect your skin, acting as a barrier to seal in moisture and prevent TEWL.
